Excursion Time: Welcome to Wegman's!

When you think of some of the best places to work, what comes to mind? Well no matter what you thought of, I'm pretty sure a grocery store wasn't on the list. Well according to Fortune, that's not the case with Wegman's, holding the number FOUR spot on Fortune's list of the Top 100 Best Companies to Work For. So what makes Wegman's so special? Rhymes with Orange went to Wegman's in Woodbridge, NJ to find out!

When we took our journey to Wegman's we were greeted by Karen (who is awesome by the way). Karen showed us around the store then took us to the seating area (which was reserved especially for us) to talk about why not only customers love Wegman's, but also why employees love working at Wegman's. Karen gave us a wealth of information, but a few key things that she touched upon really stuck with me.

1. All Employees are Created Equal
At Wegman's no employee has their job title on their name tag. This may seem like it's not that big of a deal, but think about it. Whether you're a janitor or a General Manager you have the same name tag, putting all the employees on the same level. Many people get caught up in rank or being higher than someone, but at Wegman's all employees are created equal!

2. Sticking to Morals & Values
We all know that cigarettes are bad for you, but stores still sell them despite the fact they are detrimental to your health. Well not Wegman's! They do not sell cigarettes, despite the fact that selling cigarettes is lucrative to many companies. To Wegman's the health of their customers is more important than the money that they could get from selling cigarettes.

3. Investment in Education
Wegman's hires many younger employees that stay with them while they are in high school. Wegman's offers scholarship opportunities for these employees for when they go to college. This shows that Wegman's cares about the education of their employees and understand that they are a student as well.

4. Accountability
In many stores or restaurants if there's a spill then it's the janitor's job to clean it up. Karen expressed to us that at Wegman's if any employee sees a spill or any food that may have fell on the floor it's their job to clean it up, no matter what position, because all employees are equally accountable for the well-being of all the customers and fellow employees.

Karen also talked to us about how customers keep coming back to Wegman's because they trust the brand and trust the company. After spoke with Karen we got a change to sample some of the food they had to offer. They had a huge variety and it was hard for us to choose what we wanted to eat, but in the end the food was delicious! So Wegman's is definitely doing somethings right! Rhymes with Orange approves!
