The Bus System

3 comments:

  1. Our focus was on First-Years and helping them learn the Rutgers bus system:

When First-Years come to campus, one of the toughest obstacles they must overcome is navigating the banks of our grand university. More importantly is getting around using the bus system and how to get around to each campus. We wanted to create a video that reflected this area that is essential for First-Years to know and understand.

What are the services we offer and where you can find these services? (Focusing on the first year’s concern on the bus system/being prepared to know where and what bus they need to go on to get to class on time)

    •Department of Transportation
    1.parktran.rutgers.edu
2.55 Commercial Avenue New Brunswick, NJ
    •Buses
    1.Services
    a) Rudots.rutgers.edu for campus maps and information and schedules
    b) Night mover – when the buses stop running you can call 732-932-RIDE for transportation back home to be safe
    c) Shuttles – go to downtown new brunswick
    d) NextBus – satellite services that tracks buses and when they will show up at the bus stop you are at. There is also an app for your smart phone and you can text 41411 with “rubus and a stop you want to find out” to see what busses are coming and when
    e) Every bus stop flashes times of each bus and when it is on its way and a sign for each bus that will stop at that bus stop with a sequential order of stops it will be making
    f) Also, around the campuses there are some maps to help you out
    2.Strategies
    a) Make sure to look up where your classes are gonna be
    b) Maybe take a ride on one of the buses once you get to Rutgers to see how long it will take you to get to class and so you know where to get off to make it to class on time
    c) Don’t be afraid to pick up a campus map and people will definitely be willing to help you get around
    d) NOTE: Not every bus will stop at every stop on a campus!

In our video we showed a First-Year who obviously did not go to orientation and did not think to be prepared for getting around from class to class. We also showed another student who helped this First-Year with some helpful advice (obvious not an orientation leader because of the language he was calling the First-Year by. Reminding us as orientation leaders we cannot use this kind of language). The goal of the video was to get information out to new students about the bus system, but also to show new students that they can ask for directions from any student on campus. First-Years should not rely only on orientation leaders and should feel comfortable to seek help from any student on campus. There are many ways to get information on how to navigate the bus system to get around campus and this should be explained to all new students so that they can be ready and feel comfortable coming into their fall semester.

  2. I know everything a freshmen needs to know about the bus system now, including Stan! I enjoyed the sarcasm and the use of the websites. Also I like how the character told the student where to find the information just like an orientation leader would.

  3. "I go to Rutgers, everyday is a great day!" That part was great. I felt the same way on my first day of classes about which bus goes where and what not. It was really helpful of you guys to mention how the bus times and maps can be found online. The part about Stan was a nice touch too because I feel like Stan is becoming a huge part of Rutgers and their bus system. The part about how buses will not stop at every stop on a campus is so important!
