DRUMLINE: THE MOVIE

Here's a movie that takes a peculiar route in explaining the college experience. It touches on different properties such as being a freshman, getting involved, university pride, and choices of majors. There are many incoming first-year students who are going to face these problems and it is up to us as Orientation Leaders to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Here is the trailer for those who may be unaware of what kind of movie Drumline is:

This movie not only inspires many to attend college but it paints a great picture of some of the circumstances one might find himself in during college.

 UNITY

Here at Rutgers there is a strong sense of Rutgers pride. We tend to exalt our school and represent it in the highest of ways to other outside universities. However, when it comes to discussing Rutgers amongst each other, our views seem to take a shift for the worse. We tend to complain because everything isn't exactly how we want it to be but in actuality, college is about stepping outside of your comfort zone, not getting in it. The incoming freshman are going to look to us for an example of the college experience and if we give them what we sometimes give our fellow Rutgers students, they might be hesitant in their decision to attend our university. We, as a team of experienced leaders, must convey the UNITY that Rutgers so greatly portrays. "One Band, One Sound"

GETTING INVOLVED

Rutgers has a lot to offer, so why not offer it?!?! We possess enough cumulative knowledge about Rutgers to appeal to ANYONE!! These new students will be headed in various directions with their academics and social lives but getting involved should be apart o f every student college career. There is nothing more satisfying than having an organization or a club to be apart of that represents YOUR college. There are gaming clubs, sports clubs, dance clubs, event planning clubs, foreign language clubs! You name it, we got it! All we have to do is share our knowledge; let the students know they have options and 9 times out of 10, they will take them. Getting involved acts as a way of dishing out energy in a healthy way and it gives you a nice break from the strenuous life of schoolwork. It is one of the most beneficial components of being in college.

CHOICES OF MAJORS

In the movie there was a conflict of interest. Laila (Zoe Saldana) really enjoys dancing but her parents do not agree that it is worth paying for as a major. We will have all types of students before us during orientation. Some will be sent primarily off their parents' desire. Others will be first-generation independent students looking for a better chance at life. We do not know what we will be faced with when these students get here but it is best we be ready. ANY major, is worth BEING a major, if it IS a major. Our primary concern must be to encourage students. College will be challenging enough without the doubts of others weighing a person down.

Keep positive and help students to the best of your ability!
