First Annual Livingston Games!

COMPETITION COMPETITION COMPETITION!

This week Livingston had its first annual Livingston Games. It was a pretty low-key event that challenged all the first-year residence halls in different activities to win the “Livi Cup”. The program was put together to unite residence halls and introduce them to other halls and first-year through friendly competition. Each residence hall put together a team to represent their hall. They faced against other in these activities and the winner of each would receive points towards their final score. The activities were Photo Scavenger Hunt, Dodge-ball Tournament, and Relay Races. I was able to gather a team from my house in Quad 2. Most of my team was also Psychology Discovery House members. We were early to the event and had to wait for the administrators.

The first event was the Photo Hunt. The administrators gave us a checklist of random things to find on campus. Each photo was given points based on the difficulty. Creativity was given to the more creative photos. At the first event we were introduced to the other teams from Quad 1 and South Towers. It was cool meeting new people through this activity. Competition seems to bring out the best in people. So my team and I were sent out through campus to find everything on the checklist. The destinations ranged from “Find a Campus Dean” to “Find Something Blue”. My group used each other as resources and collaborated on ideas to taking creative pictures. This activity reminded me a lot of when NSO had the Game Show for first years during orientation. Each team had competition and had to use each other's resources to review on everything they have learned through orientation. The photo hunt had us review all the resources we have learned through our first-year. Competition just makes it more fun!
Dodge-ball Tournament

The second activity was the Dodge-ball Tournament! My team was pretty hyped until we saw who we were competing against. My group consisted of three "girly" girls and two guys. Against a ton of "jocks" you could only imagine what happened. We got out butts wiped out :-[. This event, though not too successful for our team, was fun because we interacted with other halls, that we probably wouldn't if we weren't in the program. Most Residence Hall programs aim to get students together and to interact with each other in different ways. This Livingston Cup challenged students, not only against other halls but to interact and communicate with their team. During orientation, we will also be having groups of students that wouldn't speak to each other. Our job as Orientation Leaders is to make everyone feel included and important to the group. The last activity was the Relay Races. Due to the rain, the races were postponed till today (Friday 4/20). Most of my team went home for the weekend. We basically had to forfeit :-[. This experience though, made me realize a lot of my job this summer. We will basically be encouraging students to interact like I did this week.
